Tutorial by JT's Creations
I was inspired to create the "stone" foundation on the Heritage after seeing photos JT posted on the World Wide Miniatures forum of a Sugar Plum dollhouse she was building. JT used egg cartons to create "stones" and Delaney Cottage was created. JT has graciously donated this tutorial.

Materials:
egg cartons - cardboard ones, not foam
artist pastels - black, white, (or gray), ochre, brown
paint - the color you’ll want your mortar to be
spackling
hair spray
modge podge
white glue
Step One:
Cut egg carton into smaller pieces to make coloring easier. I preferred working with the flat parts of the lid.

Step Two:
There are actually two methods I used to color my stones. For the most part, I used artist pastels, which is what I will put in here. The other method is dry brushing. Gently rub pastels onto a piece of paper. You’ll want some gray, brown and ochre - all kept separate from each other.
Step Three:
Using a stiff brush, brush the color on the egg carton. I used mostly gray, adding touches of brown and ochre. Spray with hairspray and let dry.

Step Four:
While drying, paint the surface you are going to be turning to stone with whatever color you plan for your mortar to be.

Step Five:
Once egg carton is dry, tear into small pieces.

Step Six:
Start at the bottom and begin gluing the pieces to your surface. Mix spackling and paint to make your mortar. Fill the gaps between your stones using a small syringe or paint brush to apply the mortar.

Step Seven:
Once it’s all dry, cover with modge podge.
