Wallpapering Basics for Dollhouses

Wallpapering in miniature might sound intimidating, but it’s one of the easiest ways to give your dollhouse instant character. Whether you’re working with your very first kit or you’ve got a collection of half-finished projects staring at you, wallpaper is the fastest way to make a room feel “lived in.”
Choosing the Right Paper

• Printable Papers: Downloadable designs (like the ones in my resource library) are the most flexible—you can resize them, reprint if you mess up, and swap them out easily.
• Scrapbook Papers: Cheap, sturdy, and endless designs at craft stores. Watch the scale, though—what looks subtle at 12x12 inches can scream “giant polka dots” on a 1:12 wall.
• Specialty Dollhouse Wallpaper: Sold online or in miniature shops, already scaled correctly. More expensive, but you get that authentic vintage look.

Tools You’ll NeedKeep it simple:

• Metal ruler or straight edge
• Sharp craft knife or scissors
• Glue stick or tacky glue (thinned down with water if needed)
• Foam brush or brayer (to smooth out bubbles)
• Tweezers (lifesaver for tight corners)

Prepping the Walls

• Dry Fit First: Always cut your wallpaper slightly larger than the wall, then trim down after it’s in place.
• Sand Smooth: Bumpy walls = bumpy wallpaper. Sand down glue ridges from assembly.
• Base Coat: If your wood is raw or dark, give it a coat of white paint. This keeps your wallpaper colors true.

Application Techniques

1. Glue Stick Method: My go-to for printables. Apply glue directly to the paper, press in place, smooth out. Easy to reposition if needed.
2. Wallpaper Paste (thinned tacky glue): Best for heavier scrapbook paper. Brush onto the wall, then press paper down.
3. Double-Sided Tape: Quick and clean, but less forgiving—line it up carefully.

Pro tip: Start in the middle and work your way out. This pushes bubbles to the edges instead of trapping them in the middle.

Corners & Trims

• Don’t wrap wallpaper around corners—it almost always buckles. Instead, cut two pieces and butt them up together.
• Use trim (like 1:12 baseboards and crown molding) to hide seams and messy edges. No one will know.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Using real-world wallpaper: It’s too thick and won’t scale properly.
• Skipping the dry fit: If you don’t test first, you’ll end up trimming crooked on the wall.
• Over-gluing: Less is more. Too much glue = warping.
