The Bellingham Farmhouse ~ A Depression Era Rooming House
I found this farmhouse for sale online years ago and immediately knew what it was meant to become—a Depression Era rooming house inspired by the 1984 film "Places in the Heart" starring Sally Field.
The movie's portrayal of resilience, community, and making do during the hardest of times resonated deeply with me. It captured the spirit of families taking in boarders, strangers becoming family, and the quiet strength it took to survive the 1930s.
This farmhouse will recreate that atmosphere—a place where rooms are rented out to help make ends meet, where the dining table seats a mismatched group of residents who've become a makeshift family, and where every piece of furniture tells a story of practicality over luxury.
The Depression Era aesthetic is all about worn but well-kept furnishings, muted colors, handmade touches, and the kind of details that show people making the most of what they had. It's a project about dignity in difficult times.
